Definido por George Sand como el jardín más bello que había visto, el Jardín Thuret es un arboretum y jardín botánico de diseño paisajista-romántico del siglo XIX.
The collections consist, essentially, of trees and shrubs from different subtropical and/or warm climates around the globe which were introduced as seeds. It is estimated that this garden contains around 1600 species of trees and shrubs and that the introduction of other tens of thousands other species has been tested.
Current highlights include the collections of Eucalyptus, conifers, Acacias, Melaleucas, Pittosporum and Callistemon, palm trees – a surprising example of Nannorrhops as well asJubaeas– and Encephalartos among many others..
Initiated by the scientist Gustave Thuret in 1857, it has belonged to the French State since 1878. This garden is currently run by Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (I.N.R.A.).
Its maintenance is somewhat deficient, as is the case with other large gardens located in the southern France and managed by the public administration.
