Parajubaea torallyi torallyi
This magnificent robust palm is the species which naturally grows at the highest altitude worldwide.
Its scientific name is due to its similarity to its Chilean relative the Jubaea chilensis.
It grows in dry inter-Andean valleys (with anual precipitation of barely 550mm), up to an altitude of 3400 metres above sea level.
It has only just recently been introduced into gardens in south east Europe where it has proved to be easy to cultivate. It grows fast, fears waterlogged soil, and when young, strong winds. It can tolerate lime.
The variety microcarpa does not grow to the same size (neither do its seeds) as the var. torallyi, but it is similar as far as its adaptability and strength.
This palm is in danger of extinction due to the destruction of its natural habitat though it provides numerous resources for the local people. It is the ideal palm to line up along streets, avenues or in gardens.
